The theoretical basis of the type of medicine Attilio Speciani practices every day in his work with his patients rests on a deep knowledge of immunology.

Human beings have within their immunity systems the best and most effective of therapists, the healing principle itself. When the immunity system is weakened or drastically modified by poor eating habits, pollution or by Modern Man's departure from nature's ways, apparently irrational or suicidal reactions of the immunity systems are responsible for grave suffering and disease.

A doctor's mission is to balance out the patient's immunity system and stimulate it into giving those defensive responses that lead to healing. To the only true type of healing: the one that a patient gives himself through his own system.

The great protagonist of the voyage from sickness to health is therefore the patient, who must be led by his doctor to awareness of his own autonomy. It's first of all a responsibility act. Each individual has within him/herself the strength and tools to react to sickness and therefore the power to fight it and, when possible, defeat it. The patient must become aware of that and take on responsibility for the struggle instead of delegating it to the doctor while taking a passive role.

Greatly responsible for this passive attitude (even the term “patient” is indicative of it) is the assertive and prescriptive nature of contemporary medicine, which narrows human life down to biology and therapy to pharmacological chemistry. But patients also contribute to this error in perspective, by finding the easy way out in drugs instead of modifying their own food habits through an adequate diet (food intolerances are the key of therapeutic work) as well as their life habits through moderate but regular physical activity.

Illness is not only or not mainly an enemy that must be fought: it's first of all a precious alarm signal our system sends us to put us on the alert, to point to our need to take care of ourselves. In this sense it is not arbitrary to talk about “benady”, i.e. benevolent malady, with a warning function. It is a warning that comes from within our own system, from that mind-body system whose powerful abilities at self-analysis we often underestimate.

Attilio Speciani continues a family tradition: his father Luigi Oreste Speciani was the founder of psycho-somatic medicine in Italy and one of the pioneers of homeopathy in our country. It is not surprising, therefore, if the basis of his training and professional work is the concept of integrated medicine: of a medicine, that is, capable of accepting and utilize the different therapeutical techniques made possible by science, with no preclusion to conventional medicine, homeopathy or acupuncture. More than “integrated medicine” we should just call it Medicine, period. There is only one medicine: the one that helps the sick to heal by choosing each time the most effective tools, with no prejudices or dogmas.
