An interesting scientific study explained the differences between eating a high-salt diet and a low-salt diet. People who eat more salt breathe less easily, with an increase in resistance in the airways and a greater chance of developing asthma. Practically speaking, it means that our usual diet, rich in cheese, cold cuts, bread, crackers and sweets, can make respiration difficult. It can also complicate a simple bronchitis and definitely increase blood pressure.
In one of the last issues from last year’s J Sports Sci (2001 Nov; 19 (11):865-73 ) a group pf British researchers monitored a diet followed by a group of persons who suffered from asthma after exercise or sport. The people who consumed less salt in their diets reduced the resistance in the airways and increased oxygen saturation in artery blood. The opposite result occurred during the high salt diet.
We need to reflect on our eating habits. When we talk about allergic phenomena correlated to diet, we are dealing with a controversial topic but we can’t remain indifferent to the evidence. The negative relationship with salt and salty foods (all mass-produced foods contain considerable quantities) has already been discussed by Eurosalus in connection with many health problems, such as Premenstrual Syndrome or sudden Swelling of the extremities, or even High blood pressure.
