The heralded Round Table among the most renowned Italian and European experts onm food allergy brought an end to the second day of the AMIEC (Italian Association of Clinical Ecology)conference. The event was held in the splendid setting of Vatican city, at the Pontificia Università Urbaniana. This historic site, used for training evangelizers, hosted the confrontation among the various opinions on the theme of Food Intolerance Diagnosis. It was the perfect location from which to launch the message of cooperation and extend an invitation to advance along the road of science and innovation. So, was it a friendly meeting? Not completely: the contrasting opinions and objections weren't lacking.
The meeting was moderated by Luciano Lombardi (creator and long-time conductor of a well-known RAI program "Check up") . Since he is an expert and careful journalist, he was able to help the attendees grasp the essence of the opinions that were expressed by the speakers and, at the same time, tone down any possible conflicts. Some malicious persons judged the unexpected absence of the awaited Professor Giorgio Calabrese (a well-known opponent of Intolerance tests) as diplomatic conduction, even though it was perfectly justifiable.
Without a doubt the scientific feedback that was generated during the day was intense and outstanding, rich with indisputable scientific data regarding the new evidence on inflammation caused by delayed food allergies (or intolerances.). As a matter of fact, it's becoming increasingly evident that the means by which intolerances exert their actions is the increase in low-grade inflammation. The build-up of intolerances leads the body to an inflammatory saturation on an immunological scale and to the appearance of certain types of disturbances.
Professor Giovanni Gasbarrini, a Gastroenterologist from the University of Rome, gave a stimulating talk in which he signaled the need for a complete evaluation of each patient's clinical situation. In particular, he reminded those present that the different bacterial composition of the intestine can be a precise cause of intestinal fermentation and absorption of anomalous or undesired substances. He also warned against the use of tests with multiple positives, such as the imbalance index, and drew attention to the fact that a food intolerance therapist must always know how to evaluate the complete nutritional situation of a patient ( body fat, lean mass, metabolism. body water, etc.).
Doctor Attilio Speciani presented a discussion that was profuse with the most recent scientific data on the correlation between nutrition, inflammatory reaction and the appearance of pathologies. He reasserted that the greater percentage of the academic world, even though it is faced with clear and evident scientific fact, nevertheless avoids seeking further knowledge of the area. In this regard, he cited many recent television debates on this theme: Although it has been proven that a person suffering from food intolerances receives inflammatory signals that facilitate weight gain, it is systematically denied in a way that is worthy of a lawsuit.
Professor Carmelo Rizzo confirmed the holistic vision of the conference and called for the need to insure that the tests, even non-conventional ones , be of a verifiable quality. Doctor Mazzuca Mari, on the other hand, described food intolerances as "non definite" in their mechanisms, but certainly active on an immunological scale. Professor Marcello Mandatori, who was disappointed in the fact that even after 25 years of scientific work, academic medicine still insists upon not recognizing the existence of these phenomena found his counterpoint in Professor Domenico Schiavino . Professor Schiavino described the tests for food allergies and repeated that so-called scientific medicine still has not developed a test for food intolerances that is unequivocally precise.
Faced with the wealth of ideas brought forth during the day, the interviews of several spectators revealed a certain unrest. This sentiment was linked to the fact that such a firm academic opposition to evident data can only result in stimulating the public to turn away from doctors, who are obligated to take a negative position and instead seek the help of persons who may be less scientific, but who surely have a greater understanding of the types of disturbances that are presented. One doctor who was interviewed literally stated "... you are ill and you go to a doctor. He runs some tests that indicate that there's nothing wrong with you. After a while, you start to think that you are crazy, until you realize that if you change your eating habits, you'll get better. At that point you start out on an important path of research .in which only upon rare occasions can a personal doctor know how to be of help".
The conclusion by the legendary Professor Jonathon Brostoff, Allergist and Immunologist of Kings College of London, re-confirmed the existence of food intolerances, proven by scientific studies conducted in the finest British universities, but nevertheless unrecognized by academic science. However, his call for cooperation for the benefit of the patient will perhaps be heard sometime soon.
