artrite2.jpg In the past we looked for foods with anti-inflammatory properties and researchers worked to find a possible natural analgesic to add to meals. A series of relatively recent and swiftly expanding  discoveries illustrated that the quality of the food, the ratio of carbohydrates to proteins in every meal, and the action of the insulin induced by food are the principal causes of many cases of rheumatoid arthritis. These substances called adipokines  are produced in adipose tissue are the new emerging factors of inflammation and this means that smart food choices can help to cure these problems in a natural way

On many occasions, Eurosalus has discussed how diet can affect the origin and maintenance of rheumatoid arthritis due to the inflammatory effect of food intolerances (delayed food allergies) . Today we can add that the knowledge of how a balance in the various food components can be instrumental in provoking and maintaining inflammation in the joints

The discovery of adipokines was relatively recent (the first was leptin which wasn't discovered until 1994) but in reality their effects are felt throughout the entire body and in every inflammatory process. They are involved in metabolism, hormone regulation, fertility, inflammatory reactions, in arthritis and in many other conditions.

Considering the vast diffusion of this substance, it's a wonder that even many doctors are unaware of its existence and, most of all, of its importance: in essence, adipokines cause and control almost all inflammatory and painful phenomena within the body. Accordingly, Science is proclaiming them to be "the emergent factors of inflammation". At any rate it's certain that adipokines are involved in the origin and maintenance of rheumatoid arthritis and joint pain in general.

In order to understand how the lack of knowledge about this substance's action affects Medicine, just imagine walking into the Rheumatology and asking if a modification in diet could help arthritis patients. The question usually receives a negative response or at best, the suggestion that it's always good to lose a little weight. However, in November of 2007 Nature Clinical Practice Rheumatology   published an in-depth study on the role of adipokines in Rheumatology and the therapeutic possibilities of these discoveries ((Lago F et al, Nat Clin Pract Rheumatol. 2007; 3(12):716-724). This study was even proposed by Medscape (the American agency that is responsible for medical education, among other things) as an update for doctors in 2007)

Of these substances, the most important known today are Leptin, Adiponectin, Resistin and Visfatin. They all derive from a diet that activates insulin resistance, and therefore, the principles of the GIFT diet can be an effective therapy for reducing and regulating their production.

In practical terms, this means that a balanced breakfast can be considered as a first step towards a cure that respects physiology as well as the most innovative scientific research.
