We are no longer alone. Eurosalus has always pointed out the possibility and need to rebuild immune tolerance to a non-tolerated food by way of dietary schemes resembling those of weaning and through the use of low dosage preparations. In this way, every allergic or intolerant person can be helped to resume a varied, enjoyable and complete diet again.
If we consider the fact that recent data show that the prevalence of food allergy in the average population has reached 4% (and even 8% in children),it's clear that this is a serious problem for which we must find a solution
When confronted with many academic reports, one really felt quite alone in the panorama of worldwide allergology. Finally, however, a new and interesting study was published on ,which is considered to be the allergists' bible. This article (Buchanan AD et al, J Allergy Clin Immunol 2007 Jan;119(1):199-205. Epub 2006 Oct 27) reiterated once again that, even when faced with a food allergy (even those which are IgE mediated and for which foods are usually eliminated) the use of low doses of a food substance can lead to tolerance recovery and to the regulation of the allergic reactions induced by the food.
In short, even science declares that one can recover from food allergies ( and we say from allergies in general).
The patients in this study were allergic to egg.and were given small, but gradually increasing, quantities of this substance. This work which was conducted over a period of two months and followed a classic model of oral hypo-sensitization, revealed interesting data that causes us to reflect upon several points.
While the value of the IgG4's for egg increased (the IgG4's are antibodies that grow when tolerance towards a food is developed), the IgE's were not modified in the least (immunoglobulin E's are usually known for the violent reactions that they induce). This aspect should make us wonder why we're used to evaluating only the IgE's in everyday clinical practice. At the same time, the Health Department is spending an enormous amount of public funds in order to study only the IgE's (through the RAST) whose results could prove to be totally unreliable.
This means that when we induce tolerance, that is, when we recover from an allergy, there doesn't necessarily need to be a decrease in the IgE's. What is important, however, is that the body as a whole regains balance and a new regulation. In this way, with the use of models that differ from the ones that were considered up to now, we can achieve recovery and restore health
We are coming closer to a moment in which we can finally say "Buon appetito" to people who suffer from food allergies.
