This article refers to the well-known “cold sores” that appear in the lip area usually after physical or mental strain, or as a consequence of nutritional stress or intense solar exposition.
Although it’s extremely annoying, this sore is almost always benign and vanishes without leaving a trace.
The Herpes virus is always present in our body, but when it is unable to adequately defend itself under stressful conditions, the virus is free to act in a decisive manner.
This problem can be faced in an effective way with natural therapies and, like a cold, it's one of those diseases that brings people closer to Homeopathy after they've seen the results it provides.

If you are interested in knowing more about this subject, you may consult the Merck Manual under the heading Herpes Virus infections.
More interesting information may be found in the list of diseases drafted by the Karolinska Institutet of Stockholm. The first part addresses the signs and symptoms of the sores on the lip (What are cold sores?) and the second part is a link where you can find an animated summary of the vital cycle of the virus (Schematic representation of herpes simplex virus infection).
Homeopathy
The Sulphur remedy, even at heavily diluted doses is used for patients who often alternate between internal illnesses and skin diseases like herpes. This remedy is prescribed by a homeopathic doctor only after serious consideration and is therefore excluded from the list of remedies listed below. The four basic remedies that can be used for self-cure, according to the symptoms are:
Rhus toxicodendron 7 CH: 3 granules 3-4 times per day, with a gradual reduction of frequency as the symptoms subside: to be used when the sore appears on reddened skin in the form of tiny blisters filled with clear liquid that are quite itchy; the itchiness doesn’t go away with scratching but improves with heat.
Ranunculus bulbosus 5 CH: the same dosage as for Rhus, the blisters are full of liquid that is darker, bluish or even bloody.
Mezereum 5CH: the same dosage as for Rhus, the contents of the blisters is thick, yellowish, sometimes festering; the localized itching is always very intense.
Cantharis 5 CH: the same dosage as for Rhus, blisters contain clear liquid; the skin upon which they rest has a normal aspect (as in burns).
These remedies are always very effective and, if the characteristics of the sores are well-defined, one can opt for taking the remedy in a single dose at 200 CH or even higher.
An old fashioned but effective remedy
Often, Herpes sores pop up in places where it’s impossible to find a homeopathic pharmacy. In this case, you can use an isopathic treatment technique that is always quite effective.
After the first Herpes symptoms occur, take a small portion (about a teaspoonful)of your own urine and place it in a 1 liter glass bottle. Fill the bottle halfway with tap water. At this point, seal the bottle and shake it vertically for at least 50 times and then pour the contents into the sink.
The quantity of this first “urine dilution” that remains on the inside of the bottle is enough to prepare a second dilution. Repeat the initial procedure: fill the bottle halfway with tap water, shake it and pour it out.
Perform this procedure 4 times. After this point, you have about a half of bottle of medicine. It’s much easier to do this procedure than it is to explain it, but after 3 minutes of work, your “medicine “ is ready.
Place ten drops of this preparation directly under your tongue 3 or 4 times per day. You will notice that the intensity of the swelling, redness and pain will immediately diminish.
Since this isopathic preparation is produced from secretions, excretions or parts of a single individual, the solution that is prepared must be used only and exclusively by the person who provided the initial substance.
Trace elements
Persons who frequently suffer from Herpes should use a prevention treatment composed of a daily dose of a mix of oxyprolinates such as that contained in Oximix 2+ (1 dose per day for prolonged periods, if necessary) or Oximix 1+ (in the acute phase, 3-4 doses per day).
For the acute phase Copper-Gold-Silver is always effective in the dosage of 3-4 measures per day until the symptoms disappear.
Phytotherapy and drainage
For localized treatments, an alternative is Calendula TM, Hypericum TM and Propolis at 20%; these remedies are to be applied locally after being diluted in an equal quantity of water.
Perhaps an even more effective treatment is a mixture of oils made with 20 ml St John’s wort, 5 ml Tea tree essential oil and 5 ml Lavender essential oil. The oil can be delicately applied to affected area 3 to 4 times per day.
Traditional medicine
When a person knows that he is prone to recurring bouts of Herpes, it’s a good idea to take some simple preventive measures that consist in avoiding as much as possible some of the stress factors that tend to build up; if you must have prolonged solar exposure, avoid over-taxing your liver by staying away from rich foods; if you have just recovered from the flu, avoid intense physical activities and so on.
The following is an important recommendation: if a person is affected by Herpes in a certain moment and is in the presence of small children, avoid kissing them.
If a child is healthy, no damage will occur, but if he has so much as a simple case of eczema, the combination of eczema and the Herpes virus can bring about serious consequences.
