The word cystitis simply means inflammation of the bladder. Antibiotics are not necessarily needed in this case because sometimes the inflammation isn't caused by bacteria.

If we were referring to our thumb, we would say that we have thumbitis, regardless of whether we have struck it with a hammer, frozen it on the ski slopes, or a whether a bacterial abscess has formed around the nail. Antibiotics are not effective in all situations. "Traditionally" antibiotics or sulfonamides are always given for cystitis

There are a series of highly effective natural remedies for treating cystitis that can be used immediately by anyone.  What's more, in the case of chronic cystitis (often a form of interstitial cystitis), it's crucial to address the theme of diet and inflammation linked to food.

In our centers, we treat cystitis by dealing immediately with the problem of diet and delayed food allergies. As a matter of fact, there is often a food intolerance at the base of cystitis or a form of candida. Regardless of whether it's vaginal or intestinal candidiasis, it's still linked to the similar problems and the first cure is always diet.

Frequently people take an antibiotic and the cystitis disappears after a half an hour. In this case, the cystitis would have gone away on its own and it wasn't the antibiotic that cured it, even though many people believe so. In such a short amount of time, it's impossible to reach active concentrations of the drug.

Cystitis has a series of symptoms that don't always depend on irritation in the bladder. Even a small quantity of kidney sand (see Colic ) that has started to descend through the urethra could cause spasms or contractions that give rise to those symptoms.

Even inflammation induced by a food intolerance could be sufficient to keep the bladder inflamed and make it sensitive to any indirect stimulus: cold, sexual intercourse, bathing, uncomfortable traveling position, etc.

However, natural remedies can always be used to deal effectively with any type of cystitis, bacterial or not.

Homeopaty

Equisetum hiemale 7 o 5 CH: abundant urination with pain especially at the end of urination.

Staphysagria 7 CH: burning pains that are especially felt between urinations, but improve or even disappear while urinating

Cantharis 7 CH: violent pains that are accentuated immediately before, during and after urinating, usually with scarce quantities of urine. Blood may be present, even in abundance.

Mercurius corrosivus 7 CH: This is used in conditions similar to those of Cantharis, however there is a painful contraction at the end of urination.

Terebentina 5 CH: to be used when the blood in the urine is abundant, of a black tint and leaves abundant sediment.

All of these remedies, whether used alone or together, are to be taken as soon as the symptoms begin. The dosage is 3 granules even every 10 minutes if necessary, until the pain is reduced or disappears.

One shouldn't be alarmed at finding blood in the urine. You should always refer this problem to your doctor, but the presence of blood in the urine is relatively frequent even in cases of mild cystitis.

Trace elements

When there is a suspicion of bacterial cystitis, accompanied by fever and general involvement of the body, one must take Copper in the dosage of 2-3 teaspoons per day until the fever subsides.

If one suspects that it is a form that is caused by spasm, contraction or kidney sand, use a mixture of oxyprolinates such as the one contained in Oximix 4+ . The dosage is 2  5 ml. spoonfuls per day .

Chronic bacterial cystitis must be treated with Copper (one dose per day for extended periods) until the urine culture returns to normal.

Phyto-therapy and drainage

Persons who often suffer from forms of cystitis or even just kidney sand should always have on hand a small number of the plants listed below in order to immediately begin the proper treatment.

If one treats the problem immediately, the disinfectant, diuretic and decongestant effect of this infusion can rapidly bring the general situation back to normal.

The infusion is composed of: 20 grams of meadow grass, 20 grams of Mallow flowers and leaves and 20 grams of Bearberry (uva ursina) in 2 liters of water. The meadow grass requires a special procedure in that it must be boiled twice. Place the grass in a very small quantity of water and heat it; as soon as it begins to boil, remove it from the heat, discard the water and place the (just boiled) grass in the two liters of cold water along with the other ingredients and proceed as for a normal infusion (boil for 10 minutes and then let rest, covered, for 3 or 4 minutes). When it is ready, filter and the infusion is ready. Usually one should drink a liter per day in the acute phase. For chronic forms, one can drink two glasses per day for extended periods.

In forms of cystitis in which bacteria may be involved, but also in forms of cystitis and urethritis where there is only inflammation, Arbutus unedo TM may be used as well in the dosage of 20 drops twice daily.

Another phyto-therapeutic product that may be used is formulated with Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus to be exact). Thanks to its content of anthocyanosides, this product has an excellent regulatory action on urinary tract infections.

If the cystitis is accompanied by the production of kidney sand or stones, refer to the section heading: Colic

Colibacillosis

In addition to the information above, remember that chronic cystitis linked to an auto-infection within the intestine must be treated by re-balancing this part of the body.

In almost all cases it's important to investigate the presence of possible food intolerances and formulate a diet that is able to regulate them: in this way the local inflammation is reduced and the defenses of the intestine are built up.

To this effect, the diet should be supplemented with Yogurt, Milk enzymes, Vitamin C, Bioflavonoids and Vitamin A; a dose of Oxiurus vermicularis 200 CH will cleanse the intestines. In addition to these, take TM of Vaccinium Myrtillus (20 drops three times per day) or Vaccinium vitis idaeae 1 D (a dose of 30 to 40 drops three times per day).

Also take a litho-therapeutic, °Pyrite de fer D8, in the dosage of one vial in the evening to be placed under the tongue. Use this remedy for 15-20 days.

Naturopathy

In cases of bacterial cystitis, especially if chronic, it's necessary to improve one's individual terrain by striving to correct the imbalance that allowed the germs to install themselves. Aside from re-balancing the intestine as described above, by way of a special dysbiosis treatment, the body's defenses must be strengthened.

First of all, one must follow a correct diet since this can represent a significant cause of depression in the immune system: it's useless to take Echinacea or other such remedies if one continues to eat in a disorderly manner. Therefore, for a short period of time, it's a good idea to abstain from eating foods that contain sugar or yeast. Instead, ones' diet should include foods such as garlic, onion, lemon, green tea and yogurt. that stimulate the immune system and have an antiseptic action.

Only after ones' diet has been perfected, a Naturopath will suggest plants that are able to strengthen the immune system.  Many effective ready-made mixtures containing Uncaria, Astragolo, Echinacea, Maitake, Whitania, etc.  are available in stores. The proper dosages are given on the packages.

In order to fortify the terrain, diathetic trace elements such as Copper-Gold-Silver may also be used. The dosage is one vial on alternate days, to be taken in the .morning on an empty stomach. It can be associated with Vitamin C (500mg per day) which , aside from stimulating the immune system, is also able to acidify the urine (the acidification blocks the proliferation of the bacteria).
