Why is it that when we enter a medical studio with an allergic child we hear a lot about medicines and so little about eating habits? How much could we save on medical expenditures if doctors were less medicine-dependent? What is the scientific reasoning behind the protective action of fruit and vegetables?
The answers to these intriguing questions could help many people get better as well as aid in preventing the widespread epidemic of allergies.
We began to reflect on this matter after reading the recently published article about the relationship between a healthy diet (fruit, vegetables, fish) and the monitoring of asthma in an area in Spain (Chatzi L et al, Pediatr Allergy Immunol 2007 Sep; 18(6):480-5). The study revealed how the use of zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, peas and cucumbers had a high preventive action on asthma as well as on allergies in general when these foods were eaten during childhood. The same protective effect against allergies in general was also found in fish.
This provides us with a possible weapon against the widespread problem of allergies. The instruments that we need are inexpensive and effective but, unlike drugs, they force us to change our habits.
We at Eurosalus have been emphasizing the relationship between food and asthma or food and allergy for quite some time. One of the reasons for this reaction is the presence of panallergens within fruit and vegetables: substances that aid in weaning patients from allergies and improve the the control over the allergic reaction. Another reason is linked to the presence of minerals, particularly Manganese, Zinc and Copper, in fruit and vegetables and to their stimulating action on the immune system.
However, we need to make a change in this direction. We know that a generic “eat more fruit” is of little use, especially when parents don't eat vegetables and maybe haven't done so in years. Children need to be motivated by eating small quantities of these foods. However these foods should be eaten before eating any other food, so that their intestinal immune system (GALT) is stimulated correctly.
Make “raw, fresh, and colorful” a daily habit and your constancy will bear its fruits!
