Should homeopathic remedies (granules or drops) be taken on an empty stomach?
There is no foundation for this concern. Regardless of whether you are taking granules or drops, it's sufficient to abstain from eating or drinking 10 minutes before and after using the remedy.
How do you take a homeopathic remedy?
The most classic and effective way is that of taking granules and drops in the morning upon waking, placing them directly under the tongue and avoiding contact with the fingers (the fingers often have an oily film that might hinder the absorption of the remedy). When you take remedies several times per day, be sure to abstain from eating, drinking or smoking for around 10 minutes before and after using the medicine.
How often are homeopathic remedies to be taken?
Generally speaking, low dilution (for example 5 or 7 CH) homeopathic remedies are taken in dosages of 3 to 4 granules at a time 3 or 4 times per day. In homeopathy, the frequency is more important that the dosage, so for acute cases it's even possible to take 2-3 granules at a time at brief intervals and then gradually reduce the frequency as the symptoms improve. At the beginning, a patient may use up to 8 to 10 dosages per day but these will gradually decline to 2 to 3. When the symptoms are very acute, a possible alternative is to dissolve 4-5 granules in a glass of water and drink a portion every 15 minutes, until the symptoms improve. At this point, resume the usual method of taking the granules, but at greater intervals. For general rules on taking homeopathic remedies, refer to the Homeopathy page.
How can I give a homeopathic remedy to a child?
Very small children or infants can have difficulty in dissolving the granules in their mouths. The best way to give them the medication is to dissolve 10 granules in a little water and give them 2-3 spoonfuls throughout the day; alternatively the 3-4 granules that were prescribed can be dissolved in water and you can give it to the child over the period of a few minutes.
Are all homeopathic remedies to be taken in the same way?
Pharmacies offer bottles as well as tubes for continued use from which the prescribed quantity may be withdrawn when needed. Another way of taking the remedy is with the so-called "dose tubes" that are to be taken in their entirety by emptying the contents under the tongue and allowing it to slowly dissolve in the mouth. However, to avoid negative effects, it must be taken on the days prescribed by the doctor and repeated only if he orders it
Why must homeopathic remedies be placed under the tongue?
The granules must be dissolved under the tongue because perlingual absorption is a very fast and allows the substance or water in which it is diluted to pass into the body in an effective way.
How is a homeopathic remedy prepared?
Once the mother tincture for the remedy has been prepared, a drop is placed into a bottle containing 99 drops of alcohol. This liquid is then dynamized, or rather, shaken vertically for a given number of times. In this we obtain the first Hahnemannian dilution, abbreviated in 1 CH. Then, we take a drop of this solution and place it in a bottle with 99 drops of alcohol and dynamize it again: we now have 2 CH. We can continue in this way until reaching considerable dilutions. When we refer to a 1000 CH dilution remedy this means that these procedures have been repeated 1000 times.
What is a mother tincture?
For remedies of vegetable origin, it's the result of the maceration of the plant in alcohol. If, on the other hand, it's a mineral substance, it must first be ground along with inert substances (for example, in the case of Arsenicum album, a progressive grinding process is performed up to 3 CH); the usual percentage of one part to 100 is then dissolved in alcohol until the desired dilution is reached.
What remains of the original substance after the dilution process?
After a dilution to 12 CH, the initial substance doesn't "exist" anymore, but rather the energetic image of that substance on the molecules of the alcohol or water in which it has been diluted.
Can homeopathic remedies be taken along with other medicines or drugs?
Usually this doesn't present a problem. In some cases the drug is necessary and cannot be substituted. In other cases the simultaneous combination is an effective way of reducing the side effects of some drugs that a patient needs to take.
Why is a homeopathic visit longer than a usual visit?
A homeopathic doctor must take into consideration the specific, physical problem brought to him by the patient as well as the patient's psychological and behavioral aspects that were modified by the onset of the illness. This is necessary because a homeopathic remedy acts on a physical as well as psychological level and it is therefore important to identify all of the alterations that have occurred within the body so as to understand which remedy to prescribe. What's more, in order to select the remedy that is most "similar" to that pathology and to that person, a doctor must be familiar with his history and peculiarities, also with regard to other past illnesses or behavior.
What are trace elements?
Trace elements are special minerals that are fundamental for maintaining psychophysical balance. The human body contains them in very scarce quantities and they serve to activate a series of processes and reactions within the body that allow for life and well-being; if they are scarce or insufficient, these reactions do not occur or they occur very slowly or incorrectly. Unfortunately, today our bodies are ever more in need of trace element supplement (and vitamin supplements), due to the fact that modern cultivation methods impoverish food products of a series of fundamental mineral and vitamin substances that are necessary for our health.
How do trace elements appear?
Trace elements appear in many forms. Gluconates, which are prepared by way of the natural fermentation of the potato, generally appear in liquid form and are absorbed sublingually. Other preparations are yeasts with added minerals, amino chelates and orotates that have a good absorbability but also have the risk of being potentially allergenic. This risk is present in orotates (prepared with cow colostrum) and in amino chelates (trace elements assembled with proteins which are generally soy protein). Aspartates, on the other hand, can only prepared in dry form, that is, in capsules or tablets. An important innovation is represented by oxyprolinates that are prepared in liquid form and have the advantage of being able to be mixed among themselves according to the doctor's prescription. What's more, these special salts have a high bio-availability (the active ingredient is able to readily access the cells where it performs its therapeutic function) and are prepared without preservatives. They must therefore be stored properly and we usually suggest that you keep them in the refrigerator.
How do you take trace elements?
The method for taking trace elements depends on how they are prepared and their composition. If they are gluconates, they are to be taken in a perlingual manner, that is, the prescribed quantity of undiluted liquid must be placed directly in the mouth and held there for at least a minute before being swallowed. It's best to take these trace elements with a clean mouth, that means you should avoid eating, drinking or smoking for at least 5 minutes before and after using them. Oxyprolinates do not need to taken perlingually and the prescribed quantity can be swallowed immediately after it is placed in the mouth, alone or mixed with other liquids such as juice or, in the case of infants, in baby food or in the baby bottle. Because of their high ion content, it's best to take oxyprolinates with a plastic spoon instead of a metal one. The instruction for use call for "a measure" or a "dose" which corresponds to a 2,5 ml. spoonful.
What are supplements?
Supplements are various substances that help complete or enrich the normal diet. They can be minerals or other substances, not classified among drugs, that a doctor may see fit to prescribe to a patient. Many people decide to take them of their own accord, that is they "self-prescribe" supplements, assuming that if a "little" helps, "more" is even better. Since this is not always true, it's best to ask for advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Is it true that herbs are good for you and that at the worst, they don't have any effect?
This is false. The way in which phyto-therapeutics, or plants and herbs, work is the same as with drugs, even though the effect is usually more harmonious and less oppressive. With regard to highly potent plants, such as digitalis, it's actually better to use the drug extract or just the principal ingredient, because it's easier to measure and regulate.
