It's not just about resveratrol. This important molecule, contained in grape skin, whose effects have only recently been discovered, is surely one of the reasons why moderate drinking has a protective effect with regard to a diet that is often rich in fats (like that for which the Italians and French are famous).
An American study, published in the magazine Obesity in December 2007, revealed that in addition to the protective effect of this molecule, a key factor may be the use of internal and external reference keys with regard to nutrition and the act of eating (Wansink B et al, Obesity (Silver Spring) 2007 Dec;15(12):2920-4).
As a matter of fact, in many European countries, the reasons that make a person stop consuming food are linked to an actual sense of having reached satiety: when a person has eaten enough, he stops eating. Persons whose weight is in the norm have this type of reference key that defines their choice of whether or not to eat. If you are hungry, you eat, if you are not hungry, you don't: it seems simple, but it actually is not.
Obese persons, contrary to people of normal weight, base this type of choice on external factors that are not linked to their perceptions of themselves. An average American stops eating when his plate is empty, when the beverage (maxi size) that he is drinking is finished or when the television show that he is watching is over. In these cases the internal signals and messages that come from their bodies and the fact of getting fat or staying in shape may simply depend on advertisements and suggestions from the dominant marketing campaigns.
Nutritional education should comprise taste education, appreciation of the communal aspects of sitting down together to dine as a family, a wise critical evaluation of food advertisements and a careful regulation of TV viewing. All this can help people maintain contact with their internal reference keys (well being, perception of emotions) and contribute to their staying in shape and preserving a good state of health.
