A recent study performed in Norway affirmed that there is an association between contraceptive use and the development of headache in general and especially migraines.
In this period the use of estroprogestogens during the menopause phase is under serious evaluation. This comes after many years in which these medicines have even been proposed( with the support of many pharmaceutical companies) as being beneficial aids.
The same wave of attention has also hit the estroprogestogens used for birth control (the pill). In particular, a very recent Norwegian study (Aegidius K. et al., Neurology 2006 Feb 14;66(3):349-53) performed on over 27,000 women confirmed the association between the use of these substances as contraceptives and the development of headache, but especially migraines.
What is most interesting is that there is no relationship between the dosage of estrogens or progestogens. This means that the imbalance caused by the drug is the factor that is responsible for the reaction.
Let's keep in mind the fact the pill, as discussed in the related news, raises the level of allergic reactivity within the body and can therefore cause an increase in general inflammation. What's more, the associations of estroprogestogens contribute to worsening insulin resistance and can thus accentuate inflammation by way of this mechanism.
