A little bit can actually do a lot: anemia can be cured by low doses of iron. PDF Print E-mail

Vexed by the side effects of iron supplements in anemic persons, a group of Israeli researchers found that the same improvement in iron levels could be obtained through doses of iron that might seem ridiculous. What this means is that it’s often unnecessary to exaggerate in therapies and minimal quantities may be sufficient in order to re-establish equilibrium.

This is nothing new, but when a patient leaves a medical studio with a prescription for iron supplements that destroy the stomach and immediately alter intestinal functions, it's a nice surprise to discover that very low dosages of iron may resolve even serious forms of anemia.< /p>

This study, published by the American Journal of Medicine (Rimon E. et al. Am J Med 2005 Oct;118(10):1142-7), approached the problem of elderly persons (over 80 years) with Hemoglobin conditions between 8g/dl and 11,9 g/dL. In Italy, in situations like these (Hemoglobin levels at 8,0 g/dL), a transfusion might even be proposed!

And yet these persons were given the same iron supplement at dosages of. 15, 50 or 150 milligrams per day for 2 months

In all three cases the levels of iron, hemoglobin and ferritin were raised, but those who received a dosage of 15 mg. had minimal side effects.

Back in 1996, an Italian study published in Minerva Ginecologica (Casparis D. et al. Minerva Ginecol 1996 Nov;48(11):511-8) decreed the superiority of gluconate-based Iron supplements in liquid form due to their effectiveness and tolerability in post-partum anemia treatment.

Therefore, we know that a liquid form and a readily absorbable organic salt make it possible to obtain significant results with minimal harm.

In this period another study is being performed on Iron oxypralinates and the preliminary results are already extremely interesting. As a matter of fact, the use of iron depends on a properly functioning intestine. For this reason many cases of anemia are cured by treating the food intolerance-induced colitis which is at the root of the problem or supplementing with small quantities of iron (such as that contained in Ferro Super)and minerals like Manganese, Cobalt, Zinc and Copper that help to guarantee the absorption and utilization of the iron itself.
