Milk intolerance PDF Print E-mail

When the intestine has a negative reaction to a substance, milk in this case, it has only two ways of defending itself: it expels everything (diarrhea) or it becomes paralyzed (constipation).

The body tries to get rid of poorly tolerated substances in ways that are clearly recognizable: an overly active intestine (colitis) or an overly inactive one (constipation); skin eruptions: acne, seborrhea, psoriasis, sun rash; abundant mucus. But above all, the inflammatory stimulus that starts from the intestine becomes intense physical fatigue (asthenia, as the doctors call it) and it can’t be resolved by sleep: insomnia is very frequent.

People who are intolerant to milk tend to be a little plump and have light skin- like some chubby kids, often very susceptible to otitis and colds - and if they are overweight, they tend to accumulate fat in the abdominal area (tummy).

What does “avoiding milk” mean?

For a person who is intolerant, avoiding milk means avoiding all the milk of animal origin (cow milk, goat milk, sheep milk, skimmed, predigested...) as well as related products like yogurt, whey, cheese, butter, cream, ice cream. Since many manufactured foods contain milk, special attention must be paid when purchasing them.

How can a person manage the milk diet?

No milk - on the diet days - really means no milk. This means that you’ll have to check ingredient labels on prepared foods very carefully, and also avoid hidden dairy products like milk whey, lactalbumin, lactoglobulin, casein, lactose, milk protein. It seems complicated, but you’ll soon get used to it, and after the first days, you’ll realize what is ok and what’s not.

Normal milk (for example in milk shakes or for morning breakfast) can easily be substituted with vegetable “milks”: almond, rice, soy, chestnut, oat. Try different ones to find out which one you like the best; some can even be found already in the form of yogurt or ice cream.

Cooking without milk is really easy, just by using oil or vegetable milk instead of butter. There’s no need to cook in a different way for the rest of the family: the non-intolerant ones can eventually use more freely some ingredients like cheese.
