A few general remarks on Autism PDF Print E-mail

Hello;
I would like to ask you which therapies you suggest for pathologies like autism.
Thank you.

Dear Reader,

In the first place, we would like to point out the complex interaction that exists between immune cells and the nervous system. These two systems are in constant communication by way of important molecules like histamine, NGF (Nerve Growth Factor, for which Rita Levi Montalcini won the 1986 Noble Prize), serotonin and numerous interleukins. The brain and the immune system influence each other in a reciprocal manner.
When dealing with situations like autism it's indispensable to act on a behavioral level as well as on a level that takes into consideration several important biological elements linked to diet and immune inflammation .

Several studies have associated autism with food intolerance phenomena, especially those involving milk and wheat . As a matter of fact, ANGSA (The Italian Association for Parents of Autistic Subjects) suggests to its members to regulate the use of these foods in the diet in order to improve the neurological picture.

In conditions like autism, we may assume that the immune system is involved. Therefore a nutritional regime that regulates inflammation by way of a rotational diet addressing personal food hypersensitivities can lead to the rebalancing of several nervous structures that are implicated in the symptoms.

To this scenario, it's important to add some comments on insulin and serotonin resistance: by now it's a given fact that there exists an interaction between diet and the nervous/mood state. The implementation of simple strategies that are in line with the general approach of the GIFT diet , and the resulting regulation of insulin peaks, can help to regularize the general inflammatory condition and can modulate several major neuron mechanisms that are involved with serotonin.

Our clinical experience has demonstrated that the use of trace elements has always been effective, especially in relation to the reduction in immune system inflammation. In particular, we're referring to the combination of lithium, cobalt, magnesium and manganese contained in Oximix 4, for example.

In conclusion, it's difficult to define a precise therapeutic course of action and all of the aspects that we have discussed must be placed together in a more generalized program. In particular, we're referring to a behavioral therapy that involves the entire family. The goal of this therapy is to improve and strengthen the processing of the signals that come from the outside world. In multi-factorial situations like autism it's important that every decision regarding therapy be centered on the individual in order to be able to harmonize the various levels of treatment.

Cordially,

Gabriele Piuri and dr. Attilio Speciani
