Hello.
I read the information published on your website regarding R33 drops for the prevention of seizures in the section dedicated to this subject. You wrote the following:
«For home use, I feel that one ought to have at least a bottle of R33 Reckeweg, which is a homeopathic composite. Its action on convulsions is due to the presence of Bufo rana at a high dynamization: it's not only useful for seizures, but also for all forms of hyper excitability of the cerebral structures. The product may be used as prevention treatment (15 drops, 2-3 times per day) in the eventuality of seizures of toxaemia of pregnancy (eclampsia). What's more, it may be used by all of those persons who are already under pharmaceutical treatment for epileptic or epileptoid forms and are not able to stabilize the medication dosage, or for those who perceive slight and persistent disturbances even though they are not sufficient to fully trigger a crisis. In these cases, use 10 drops morning and evening for 20 day cycles, followed by an equal period of suspension of the remedy».
And now for my questions. I am a pharmacist, but I don't have any clinical experience with R33 drops and now I am undecided as to whether to use them personally or not.
For the past four years I have had yearly episodes of seizures, probably an epileptoid syndrome that was not properly diagnosed by the EEG. At the moment I am taking 100 mg of Topamax per day but I would like to begin taking R33 of my own initiative. However I need to have more information about the cases that you have treated: could you provide it? Can they be freely used during pregnancy? Are they truly effective in preventing seizures? Lastly, I fear homeopathic deterioration, what can you tell me about this?
I anxiously await your response also because, among the R remedies, this is the only one that we are not able to confidently recommend in the pharmacy.
Dear Reader,
a product like R33 Reckweg can be freely used as a support for allopathic therapy of the epileptoid forms. In some cases this type of preparation is used in the attempt to reduce the dosages of anti-epileptic medication even though in these circumstances the possibility of a dosage reduction must be carefully evaluated by a doctor.
As we have already written in the pages of our website, the action of this preparation is mediated for the most part by a homeopathic active ingredient such as Bufo rana used at high dynamization.
Bufo rana acts upon the lymphatic system by helping to reduce the encephalic swelling and thus improves the general irritation and cerebral hyper-excitability. It must be noted that, if the dilution acts upon the primary effects of a homeopathic medicine, the dynamization allows for a strengthening of the secondary effects of that same remedy.
At this time, the use of R33 Reckeweg is supported by a positive clinical practice but is not justified from the medical-legal point of view. This, however, does not detract from the fact that the use of this homeopathic medicine within a wider therapeutic scheme can be useful for treating epilepsy.
As we have already repeated in many areas of our website, we are more and more convinced of the need to combine various therapeutic techniques in order to obtain the best results for the patient. Persons who suffer from epilepsy can use 20 sublingual drops of R33 Reckeweg as soon as they perceive the initial symptoms of an epileptic attack. In more severe cases, the R33 Reckeweg dosage may be followed by the use of Valium (to be introduced rectally). Based on our experience, if used at the onset of the initial premonitory symptoms, this association often makes it possible to impede the epileptic attack.
If this type of approach can be effectively used to placate an epileptic attack, some studies demonstrate the importance of investigating food intolerances (delayed food allergies) in order to reduce inflammation and hyper-excitability of the nervous structures.
Cardi, of the Department of Neurological Sciences at La Sapienza Univesity in Rome, demonstrated in a preliminary study (Cardi E., Acta Neurol Scand, Dec 2001; 104(6): 349-352 ) that epileptic children are more allergic than non-epileptics.
Furthermore, the identification and treatment of possible food intolerances allows for a considerable improvement in the clinical picture.
Based on these premises, in our clinical practice we always proceed with an identification of individual food hypersensitivities, the formulation of a weekly rotational diet geared towards improving the body's state of tolerance and possibly the support of low dosage hypo-sensitizing vaccines in individualized dosages.
The reduction of inflammation in the nervous structures allows for a considerable reduction in the frequency and seriousness of the attacks allowing for a better administration of the allopathic drugs taken in combination with homeopathic medicines like R33 Reckeweg.
