Winter prevention: a do-it-yourself guide for getting through the cold season PDF Print E-mail

We often talk about prevention and the substances that can help. We want to take a moment to give some practical suggestions to the many people who ask us how to to go about it. A lot of people start late, maybe after they are already sick. For those who don’t start in October, the beginning date could even be later (November, December, and sometimes even January), following the same progression scheme until spring.

Minerals

Starting from October, adults and children may begin to take one dose per day (5ml), combined with food, during or after breakfast, of Oximix 1 (oxiprolinate mixture formulated for winter protection) or of Manganese-Copper-Zinc.

Vitamins

During the period from October to March, at least until the first buds on the trees announce the arrival of spring, you should take Vitamin C supplements. We generally suggest a 1 g dose per day, preferably of a slow release preparation that makes it possible to take a single dose per day (for example Ester C Plus 100). Children can take a lesser dosage (from 250 to 500 mg per day).

Homeopathic medicines

One of the treatments that we frequently recommend is a homeopathic medicine prepared from the previous influenza strains (Influenzinum 200 or Iver 200 for example). Take one dose tube every 4 weeks; for Winter 2007/2008 the dates could possibly be the following (use Sundays as reference points),

  • 14 October
  • 11 November
  • 9 December

In the case of patients who are “weaker” or who get sick easily I prefer to prolong the treatment for three other dates.

  • 6 January 2008
  • 3 February 2008
  • 2 March 2008

On all of the other Sundays, I have my patients take a dose of Oscillococcinum 200 K in the morning. In essence, the patient takes 1 dose of Oscillococcinum 3 Sundays in a row followed by an Influenzinum on the next Sunday and then repeats the cycle from the beginning on the following Sunday.

For this type of preventive treatment, you may choose any other day or you may also choose to follow a similar pattern in which you take Influenzinum 200 every 3 weeks instead of every 4.

Diet

In this period you must search for raw, fresh and vital substances (fruit and vegetables) and this isn’t just a suggestion. For those adults and children who are unable to eat fruit and vegetables, antioxidant preparations such as Bio45 can be extremely useful.
