breakfast.jpgEat what you like at breakfast and lose weight. At first glance this might seem like a slogan for yet another "miracle product" from one of those notorious telemarketing programs but it's actually the result of a study performed by the University of Minnesota whose results were recently published on the authoritative BBC News.

The eating habits of around 2.200 adolescents were monitored over a period of five years and the conclusion of the study revealed that those who skipped breakfast weighed an average of 2,3 kg more than those who started the day with a good breakfast.

Even though it's always best to orient oneself towards a healthy choice of foods for breakfast such as whole grain cereals and fresh fruit, the study results suggest that eating something is always better than eating nothing.

Around 25% of the subjects who were examined (for the most part girls) avoided breakfast for fear of gaining weight.  Ironically, those who didn't worry about this problem and ate an abundant breakfast were found to be thinner.

It's important to emphasize that adolescents aren't the only ones who can benefit from a hearty breakfast. A similar study, in this case conducted by the University of Cambridge on middle aged persons, found the same results (Purslow LR et al, Am J Epidemiol 2008 Jan 15;167(2):188-92. Epub 2007 Dec 12).
