Attention moms! Junk food and fruit juice make bad snack choices... PDF Print E-mail

After last Friday's article on the value of “raw, fresh and colorful” as an anti-allergen, today's news stresses how important it is to observe a daily diet of natural, whole and preferably organic foods.

The existence of illnesses and disturbances likechildhood depression, hyperactivity or attention deficit syndrome represents a symptom of the psychosocial uneasiness that children and adolescents experience today.

However it's not only a matter of psychological conditions. In situations such as these, parents often feel responsible for what happens to their children on a psychological level. In reality, problematic family relationships are not always to blame, but in many instances it is the fault of the foods that the child eats.

Why is it that fruit juice seems so beguilingly healthful? A mother imagines that, at the very least, it contains fruit (of course fresh juice is a completely different substance), but she may not realize that the presence of a preservative like Benzoate can cause the outbreak of serious neurological symptoms.

Tartrazine, sodium benzoate and many other colorings and preservatives have the same type of effect. They can give rise to grave neurological reactivity and behavioral reactions. Today these problems are often treated with strong, and often dangerous, drugs while nothing is done to change the child's eating habits.

The cause and effect relationship between colorings and neurological and behavioral reactions stems from a rigorous study performed by a group of British research scientists and just recently published in “Lancet” (McCann D et al, Lancet 2007 Sep 5;[Epub ahead of print]).

There's no need to start a crusade against manufactures who add useless substances to ice creams and cookies: this will surely come about in time. Right now we believe that it's necessary to defend ourselves and our children. The best way to do this is to observe healthy eating habits, avoiding foods that contain preservatives and colorings. Sensible daily nutrition can help us to build an important defense barrier.

“Raw, fresh and colorful” is an invitation for you to make healthy food choices. Your cells will thank you.
