Ribes nigrum oil PDF Print E-mail

In many situations Ribes nigrum (blackcurrant) oil exerts an important regulating action on inflammation and allergic reactivity. Ribes nigrum is known for its important phytotherapeutic effects and is often used in the form of glyceric extract (with an alcohol base) or as a non-alcoholic concentrate (fresh plant extract) or as an oil.

This last formulation offers the body a correct balancing of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Perhaps this particular composition (blackcurrant is one of few plants that possess ample amounts of Omega 3) is responsible for its intense anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action.

It is often used in capsule form, in 500 mg capsules (occasionally 200 or 300 mg) from various producers.

Dosage

The standard dosage ranges from 2 to 4 capsules per day, during or after meals, to be distributed throughout the day for prolonged treatment.

In the case of acute allergic reactions (for example, Hives), the dosage for an adult may even be 10-12 capsules per day for a limited period of 6-8 days (5-6 grams of oil). The dosage should be gradually decreased as the symptoms subside.

The dosage for children (between 6 to 12 years) is limited to 2 to 3 capsules per day. The dosage for smaller children is 1 capsule of oil per day to be mixed directly with their food.

During acute phases (in children between 6 and 12 years) the dosage may be temporarily increased to 4 to 6 capsules per day for 2 or 3 days and then reduced as the patient’s symptoms improve.

Duration

This remedy may be used for prolonged periods, but a doctor’s advice should be sought for treatments lasting more than one month.
