Agnus castus is a remedy that has been used in phytotherapy for many years. It is mainly used for treating the hormonal and reproductive apparatuses.

Its Latin name, vitex agnus castus signifies that it is a plant with strong anti-aphrodisiacal properties, that is, it blocks testosterone in men. When used by women, this hormone-free remedy is effective in treating PMS and disturbances brought about by menopause.

Preparations

Dosages depend on the company that produces the preparation. We consider 150-200 mg of dried extract to be a standard dose for tablets. The composition is known as Agnuside.

Dosage

The instructions are mainly pertinent to the treatment of PMS and hot flashes due to menopause. In the case of PMS, we suggest a dosage of 1 (or 2) tablets per day on “normal” days with the possibility of doubling the dosage during the premenstrual week. During menopause the dosage is 1 tablet a day and the treatment can even be used for long periods of time.

Duration

In the first case, the remedy can be used during an evaluation period of 3 to 6 months before taking a pause in the treatment to verify the effects. In the case of menopausal hot flashes, the treatment period can even be 1 year and can be repeated depending on the benefits obtained.
