Menstruation disturbances PDF Print E-mail
by Attilio Speciani

This term refers to the menstrual cycle and all of the phenomena correlated with it such as premenstrual swelling or tension, the loss of blood between cycles (spotting), the use of the birth control pill and all alterations of actual menstruation: from the absence of menstruations (Amenorrhea) to excessively abundant or prolonged menstruations (Menorrhagia), to painful menstruations (Dysmenorrhea) and abundant loss of blood at unusual moments during the cycle (Metrorrhagia).

Don’t believe that only women are subject to the hormonal alterations that can lead to these physical modifications; men, too, experience the same alterations, with slightly different cycles; however these cycles aren't externally visible due to the fact that men don't have an organ like the uterus that has a monthly response to hormonal stimuli.

What’s more, modifications of the menstrual cycle don’t solely depend on the hormonal situation, but also on an infinite series of general aspects concerning a woman linked with her emotional state, the climate and nutrition.

For this field, natural medicine offers a vast series of therapeutic possibilities. All of these therapies are fundamentally aimed at re-establishing equilibrium with regard to the woman’s health in order to allow the body to function properly, without disturbances.

Another fact that must be considered is that every woman is different from another and therefore, even though the average female hormonal cycle lasts around 28 days, we mustn't consider cycles that last 25 or 32 or 33 days pathological as long as they have a regular rhythm.

Furthermore, during the course of her fertile life, every woman goes through various hormonal moments in which her menstrual cycle changes slightly; this situation cannot be classified as pathological, either.

When changes occur or when new conditions develop with respect to the regularity of the cycle, it’s necessary to consult your gynecologist and evaluate your physical state. If, however, the alterations are not serious (for example in the case of a continuous hemorrhage that creates excessive blood loss) and are recent, you can safely proceed with a natural re-balancing therapy that can promptly re-establish your health.

In addition, many of the therapies that will be mentioned may also be used for general prevention

As a matter of fact, gynecological alterations of this sort are often due to a nutritional imbalance, which in turn creates a deficiency in substances that are absolutely essential for the correct development of the hormonal and circulatory functions.

In view of this fact, it can be extremely useful to observe cyclical periods of preventive cure during the year in which, for example, you supplement your diet with vitamin E, Zinc, Copper, and vitamin B6. This practice will help the entire body and especially the hormonal functions of which we are speaking to maintain their equilibrium and more easily overcome the negative external stimuli that occur in life.

As in the case of all disturbances correlated with menstruation, it may be useful to take a Mineralogram (hair analysis), a test that gives a precise identification of a patient's mineral deficiencies or excesses.

For more detailed reading on the theme of menstruation, consult the headings: Abundant menstruation, Absence of menstruation, Painful menstruation, Premenstrual swelling, Birth control pill, Hormonal insufficiency.

Additional gynecological themes are discussed under the specific headings: Menopause, Pregnancy, Risk of miscarriage, Nursing (and Breasts in general), Endometriosis, Uterine fibroma (and Ovarian cysts), Vaginal discharge and Varicose veins.
