Bartholinitis: abscess of the gland PDF Print E-mail
by Attilio Speciani

Bartholinitis, commonly referred to as abscess of the Bartholin's gland, is one of the most annoying abscess-related forms that exist.  It is often related with sexual activity, but not necessarily caused by it.  This condition is characterized by a small gland within the labia minora of the vagina (Bartholin's gland), that begins to swell and is extremely painful.

It may reach the size of an apricot and many people have had to pierce the abscess in order to overcome the acute infection and subsequently undergo a surgical operation to remove the gland, which kept getting infected.

Natural medicine generally has a very simple way to deal with this type of infection.  Few people who chose natural treatment had to go through surgery later

How is a woman treated for Bartholinitis? Maura's story.

When Maura discovered for the first time that she had a gland located between the labia minora, she was quite surprised. She had read about a Bartholin's gland or cyst, but never in her life had she felt it or felt the need to be concerned about it. Her initial fear (swelling? Lymph node? An unknown ailment?) was gradually replaced by an unbearable pain. When she entered the emergency room, she felt ridiculous, walking with her legs spread apart, suffering from pains similar to those of an abscessed tooth that made it almost impossible for her to move.

During the first time that she went to the hospital, they lanced and drained the abscess. At this point, Maura thought that her worries were over. Unfortunately, however, as is often the case, the initial infection was already a sign of a nutritional imbalance and reduction in the body's natural anti-infection defenses. So, during the first year, she found herself in the same situation four other times. The doctors had to lance the gland another time and on the other occasions Maura was given large doses of antibiotics which in turn caused episodes of candida.

It was only after she was forced to renounce one trip (the gland became infected 2 days before she was supposed to go on vacation) and had had a terrible experience during the second (the gland became infected 2 days after her departure) that she decided to seek alternative solutions before having to undergo surgery. She started by re-organizing her diet and investigating her food intolerances in order to reduce the general state of inflammation. As a result, she noticed that even her headaches and acne improved considerably. Then she began taking supplements of Zinc, Copper and Manganese to improve her body's anti-infective abilities (Oximix 1+ or Oximix 2+) and learned how to use Melaleuca essential oil for local as well as oral treatment. This oil is one of the most effective natural antibiotic remedies that exist and it's definitely a strong ally with regard to abscesses.

For several months Maura used the two remedies that best suited the swelling of her gland and always kept them close at hand. For her specific problem she immediately used the homeopathic remedies Belladonna 9CH and Mercurius solubilis 30 CH (3 granules of each, 5 to 6 times per day, gradually reducing the frequency of use over time) at the first sign of swelling or pain. After a year's time, she had two hints of a Bartholinitis flare up that rapidly regressed with the use of medicines discussed above and nothing more. She was finally able to enjoy her vacations, serene intimate relations with her partner and the trips that she had planned.

How to proceed

Bartholinitis is in any case an abscess.  Therefore all the instructions shown under item Abscess on this website are valid.
There are, however, some specific traits of Bartholinitis that require special treatment.

--Immediate treatment

Homeopathy

At the first sign of swelling (if you notice that first) or at the onset of pain, start taking Mercurius solubilis 15 CH or 30 CH (don't use low dilutions such as  5 CH or 7 CH), together with Belladonna 5 CH (or any dilution between 5 CH and 30 CH).  Take three granules of each as often as every 30-40 minutes until the discomfort begins to subside.  At that point start decreasing the dosage and keep decreasing over the following days until you get down to 2-3 doses a day.

Phyto-therapy

Tea tree essential oil is a natural antibiotic and anti-fungus and is therefore extremely important in all forms of abscess.    As stated in the "instructions for use" below, you should take 4-5 drops 3-4 times a day and the frequency should decrease progressively over a period of 3-4 days as the situation improves.

Trace elements

Copper, which is contained in compositions such as Oximix 1+, should be taken until the abscess is gone. Take one dose of this preparation every 8 hours. Alternatively, use the mixture of manganese, copper and zinc.  Same dosage

- Preventive Treatment

In case of recurring episodes of abscesses of the Bartholin's gland, you must investigate imbalances within the entire body.

When we begin a clinical examination of this disturbance, we first rule out the possibility of any tight clothing that might restrict local breathing (tight jeans, frequent use of pantyhose).  The elements that are usually compromised or altered are of a nutritional (food intolerances ) or dysbiotic (Intestinal or vaginal candadiasis ) nature. There may be a vitamin and mineral deficiency as well. In addition, a diet exceeding in carbohydrates, with a consequent excess of insulin, can contribute to the repetition of these episodes over time.

We generally work on mineral supplementation for a long period of time (one dose per day of Manganese Zinc Copper or Cellfood Multivitamin or Bio45); we investigate the possible presence of food intolerances (the most frequent ones being milk, yeast or fungi) through a DRIA candida or a complete DRIA test .

The homeopathic remedies that often help reduce the residual hardening of the gland (a sort of small nut shape within the labia minora), and which must be taken after the repetition of infections has subsided, are Thuia and Conium maculatum.
